20 for Speightstown

Charlatan is now officially the 20th Gr1 winner for Speightstown winning Saturday’s Malibu Stakes (7f) at Santa Anita.

Charlatan stalked the leader Nashville to the home turn and then accelerated clear to defeat Express Union (Union Rags) by 4-1/2 lengths with Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy) in third.

It is the third win from four starts for Charlatan, winner of a division of the Gr1 Arkansas Derby in May but subsequently disqualified due to a drug infraction.

Bred by Stonestreet Holdings, Charlatan sold for $700,000 as a Keenelend September yearling and Stonestreet has remained in the ownership group which includes SF Racing and Starlight Racing.

Charlatan is a half-brother to Canadian Listed-placed Hanalei Moon (Malibu Moon), their dam Authenticity (Quiet American), a winner of four races including the Gr2 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs and Gr1-placed three times including runner-up in the Personal Ensign at Saratoga.

Charlatan’s third-dam Appealing Missy (Lypheor) won the Listed Prix Rose de Mai at Saint-Cloud and then the Gr3 Buena Vista Handicap in the USA.

Charlatan is 3×4 Mr Prospector and Gr1 winner Speightstown (Gone West) has Gr1 winners Lighthouse Bay out of a mare by Seeking The Gold (Mr Prospector) and Tamarkuz out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo).

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Sharing has Smart Strike (Mr Prospector) as her maternal grandsire.

Speightstown’s Gr1 winning son Munnings has Gr2 winner Venetian Harbor out of a Street Cry mare and Gr3 winner Chief Cicatriz out of a mare by Grand Slam (Gone West) while Gr1 winner Tamarkuz has Gr3 winner Red Flag with Mr Prospector as his maternal grandsire

Speightstown is advertised at $90,000 at WinStar Farm in Kentucky in 2021.
