Moon Over Miami is SW123 for Malibu Moon after winning Thursday’s Gr3 Duelling Grounds Derby (1 5/16m).
Settled worse than midfield, Moon Over Miami came with a big finish wide out to run to longtime leader Big Dreaming (Declaration Of War) inside the final furlong to score by a half-length with Shamrocket (Tonalist) in third.
It is the third win from nine starts for the Bill Mott-trained Moon Over Miami, inbred 3x3x5 to Mr Prospector and raced by his breeders Summer Wind Equine.
His dam is Gr3 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland runner-up Zinzay (Smart Strike) and the granddam Music Room (Unbridled’s Song) a half-sister to five-time Gr1 winner Music Note (A P Indy), whose wins included the CCA Oaks, and the Mother Goose and Ballerina Stakes.
The fourth dam is Champion It’s In The Air (Mr Prospector), whose Gr1 wins included the Delaware Oaks and two runnings of the Vanity Handicap.
Malibu Moon (A P Indy) is the sire of Canadian Champion Moonlight Promise out of a Smart Strike mare. He is advertised at $60,000 at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.
