It’s now some six years since we lost Street Cry at a relatively young age however, recent results suggest his influence is still an important one.
By champion European 2yo Machiavellian (Mr Prospector) out of the Irish Oaks winner Helen Street, herself a daughter of the Derby winner Troy, Street Cry was bred to be good and he did not disappoint, winning the Gr1 Stephen Foster Handicap over nine furlongs at Churchill Downs after winning the Dubai World Cup.
Injury meant Street Cry (pictured) missed the Breeders’ Cup that year and he retired to Darley’s US division at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky in 2003, where he was advertised at $30,000.
His first crop included the champion mare Zenyatta, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, the Gr1 winner and successful sire Street Boss and the Italian Gr3 winning sprinter Per Incanto, now a leading Gr1 sire in New Zealand.
Street Cry shuttled to Australia for nine seasons from 2003 through 2013 and left 764 live foals. On the track they include the champion mare Winx, Melbourne Cup winner Shocking and Group 1 winners Pride Of Dubai, Whobegotyou, Long John, Stay With Me, Trekking and Heavens Above.
To date as a broodmare sire Street Cry has 70 stakes winners highlighted by 10 Group or Grade 1 winners to a range of pedigree.
In the last month in Australia he has the Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), the Gr1 Coolmore Classic winner Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy) and the Gr3 Doncaster Prelude winner Cascadian (New Approach).
Street Cry mares have worked with a wide range of pedigree however, there are some trends beginning to emerge.
Scat Daddy (Johannesburg), the sire of Con Te Partiro, is also the sire of the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Skitter Scatter while War Front (Danzig) is the sire of Gr2 Vintage Stakes winner War Decree while Exchange Rate (Danzig) is responsible for South American G1 winner Mr Bailetti, Gr2 winner Ultimo Sueno and Gr3 winner Kir Royal.
Duplicating Mr Prospector has resulted in North American Gr1 winners Diversify, Vino Rosso and Street Band, the aforementioned Skitter Scatter and Con Te Partiro, Australian Gr1 winner Lyre as well as the New Zealand Gr2 winner Sumstreetsumwhere.
One of his more interesting winners as a broodmare sire is Gr2 Rockfel Stakes winner Lucida, a daughter of Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) and therefore inbred 3×3 to Street Cry and his sister Helsinki.
Street Cry sadly passed away in 2014 at age 16 when his fee at Jonabell Farm was advertised at US$100,000 but both his daughters and stallion sons will undoubtedly continue to make an impression on the breed for years to come.
