We had an overwhelming response to our duplicating Danehill article and there was one question posed by several readers with its combination visible in two of the Group winners at Caulfield in Australia on Saturday.
The question was how Sadler’s Wells had worked with Danehill and the simple answer was there are plenty of winning examples.
The most obvious and high profile Sadler’s Wells son Galileo got Frankel and Highland Reel among several others out of Danehill mares while another son of Sadler’s Wells that has worked effectively with Danehill albeit at a lower profile is El Prado.
El Prado’s son Medaglia d’Oro has Gr1 winners Vancouver and Flit out of mares by Redoute’s Choice and Saturday’s Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner is by Flying Artie, a grandson of El Prado, out of a Redoute’s Choice mare.
Kitten’s Joy is another son of El Prado to enjoy success with Danehill-line mares including the 2000 Guineas winner Kameko and the French and US Listed winner Edisa both out of Rock Of Gibraltar mares.
Kitten’s Joy is also effective with Sadler’s Wells with Gr1 winners Sadler’s Joy, Divisidero and Kitten’s Dumplings inbred to Sadler’s Wells.
And now as a broodmare sire Kitten’s Joy already has last years US Gr3 winner Fluffy Socks, a daughter of Slumber, a son of Cacique (Danehill).
Flying Artie was rated the Champion 3YO Colt in Australia in the 2016-17 classifications when his wins included the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over 1200m at Flemington after placing in Australia’s two premier races for juveniles – the Golden Slipper and the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Flying Artie is by the Breeders’ Cup Mile winner El Prado and while there is not a lot of evidence of Danehill success he does have Australian Gr3 winner out of a Rock Of Gibraltar mare and to date, four of Flying Artie’s winners are out of Danehill-line mares with his Listed-placed The Art Of Flying out of a mare by Hard Spun (Danzig).
Returning to Medaglia d’Oro, he was represented as a broodmare sire at Caulfield by the Gr2 Peter Young Stakes winner Parure, a daughter of Epaulette, a son of Commands (Danehill).
Epaulette also has the Irish Gr3 winner Lapulced’Acqua out of a mare by Authorized (Montjeu). Montjeu’s son Camelot has female Gr1 winners Even So (Danehill) and Wonderment (Konigstiger) with Even So 4×3 to Danehill and Wonderment 4×4 Danehill.
The reigning Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sottsass is by Siyouni (out of a Danehill mare) out of a Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare and the Prix du Jockey-Club winner Intello is by Galileo out of Danehill mare and he has the Gr3 winner Young Rascal with a duplication of Danehill and French Listed winner Sonjeu with a duplication of Sadler’s Wells.
Simply on numbers, inbreeding to Sadler’s Wells has a slightly better strike-rate than duplicating Danehill with some 164 stakes winners from nearly 10,000 named foals headed by Enable and at the weekend we had the UK Gr3 Hurdle winner Soaring Glory.
One combination working with success is the combination of Sadler’s Wells and Rock Of Gibraltar. Given they both stood under the Coolmore banner in Ireland it was inevitable they would be seen together in pedigrees.
We have touched on Kameko but Galileo has Gr1 winners Photo Call and Line Of Duty out of Rock Of Gibraltar mares while in reverse, Rock Of Gibraltar has Chilean Gr1 winner Cascada Surena with her granddam by Stagecraft (Sadler’s Wells).
Considering the number of active stallion descendants of Sadler’s Wells the possibilities of combining with mares carrying Danehill is many.
It can be seen in reverse in the Gr1 winners The Fugue & Flintshire (Dansili out of a Sadler’s Wells mare), Best Solution (Kodiac), The Grey Gatsby (Mastercraftsman), Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie), Peeping Fawn (Danehill) and The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) among others.
