By anyone’s standards Monomoy Girl had an eventful weekend.
On Saturday afternoon she won her second Breeders’ Cup Distaff and on Sunday night she sold for $9.5million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale, billed as the “Night of Stars”.
Fans will still get another year of seeing the daughter of Tapizar on the track in 2021 after confirmation from new owner Spendthrift Farm the five-year-old will remain in training with Brad Cox.
“She’s a superstar, she’s an all-timer,” Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey said. “She’ll go back to Brad Cox, and that’s the plan right now. She appears to be very sound, the vet checked her out and everything looks good.
“She’ll go back in training another year, and then we’ve got a stallion or two that might suit.”
Monomoy Girl’s price ties her in second place of racing or broodmare prospects sold at public auction in North America.
The record-holder is Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, sold for $10 million in 2012, followed by two-time Eclipse Award champion Songbird, sold for $9.5 million in 2017.
Spendthrift spent big with $2.4 million for Got Stormy, who will also remain in training, and 4.2 million for dual Grade 1 winner Bast, in foal to Justify.
Five-year-old Grade 1 winner Midnight Bisou sold for $5 million to part-owner Chuck Allen, who bought out his partners.
Overall, 142 horses changed hands for a total of $80,237,000, an 18% increase in gross from 2019 and the second highest gross all-time for The November Sale. The average rose 6% to $565,049, with a median of $200,000. Twenty-two fillies and mares sold for $1,000,000 or more.
