Combatant

30 Gr1 for Scat Daddy

The saying of  ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” rests easily on the shoulders of Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap (10f) winner Combatant.

Having had 14 starts in stakes races without success previously, Combatant loomed at the home turn and then found plenty in the drive to the line to hold out Multiplier by a neck.

It is the first stakes win for Combatant and the 30th Grade or Group 1 winner for Scat Daddy (Johannesburg).

Inbred 3×4 to Mr Prospector (Raise A Native), Combatant is a half-brother to the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes winner Long Lashes (Rock Hard Ten) and is one of eight winners left by the unraced Border Dispute (Boundary).

Scat Daddy himself is 4×2 to Mr Prospector and enjoyed great success duplicating Mr Prospector with South American Grade 1 winners Dalcita, Il Campione, Solaria, El Bromista, Knockout, Kitcat, Wapi, and Kitcat bred this way as well as the Prix Morny winner and emerging sire No Nay Never.

No Nay Never has the July Cup and Middle Park Stakes winner Ten Sovereigns out of a mare by Exceed And Excel (Danehill) and his Group 2 Premio Frederico Tesio heroine Chestnut Honey is 4×3 to Mr Prospector.

Scat Daddy also did well with mares carrying Danzig (Northern Dancer), the sire of Combatant’s broodmare sire Boundary, with the likes of Irish Group 1 winners Sioux Nation and Skitter Scatter.

Combatant’s fourth dam is champion Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer), Canadian Horse of the Year and dam of champions L’Enjoleur, La Voyageuse and Medaille d’Or as well as stakes winners Grand Luxe and D’Accord.

She is also ancestress of Australian Group 1 winners and champion sires Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago.
