22 for Foxwedge

Charleise is SW22 for Foxwedge winning Saturday’s Spear Chief Hcp (1500m) at Eagle Farm.

Charleise was worse than midfield coming to the home turn and then finished powerfully to get up close home and edge Groundswell (Fastnet Rock).

It is the fifth win from 18 starts for the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained four-year-old, previously Listed placed as a two-year-old at Flemington.

The five-year-old is 3×4 Danehill and Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) has enjoyed some success duplicating Danehill including English Group 3 winner Foxtrot Lady whose dam is by Flying Spur, the maternal grandsire of Charleise, South African Listed winner Infamous Fox, English Listed winner Hertford Dancer and the Macau Derby winner Expansion.

Charleise’s third-dam Happy Spring (Rory’s Jester) won at two in Brisbane and Listed-placed in the Doomben Slipper, she a sister to Gr2 Maribyrnong Plate winner Happy Giggle and three-quarter sister to Dequetteville Stakes at Morphettville winner Sisterhood (Rory’s Jester), the dam of Gr3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Flemington winner Living Spirit (Hennessy)

Further back and the sixth dam is the Falmouth Stakes winner River Dane.

Gr1 winner Foxwedge stands at Woodside Park in Victoria where he was advertised at $11,000 last season.
