Domestic Spending is the third Gr1 winner for Kingman winning Saturday’s Hollywood Derby (9f) at Del Mar.
Rated behind the early speed set by Get Smokin, Domestic Spending began his move before the final turn, moving up four wide into the home straight and then finished determinedly to edge Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute) by a head with Gufo (Declaration Of War) a neck away in third.
It is the fourth win from five starts for the Chad Brown-trained Domestic Spending, sold for 300,000gns as a Tattersalls October yearling, and previously the winner of the Saratoga Derby – his only defeat a third place finish in the Gr2 National Museum Of Racing Hall Of Fame Stakes at Saratoga.
He is the only foal to race for his dam Urban Castle (Street Cry), winner of the Listed River Eden Stakes at Lingfield. She is a half-sister to Gr3 Winter Hill Stakes at winner Queen’s Best (King’s Best), the dam of Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Queen’s Trust (Dansili), and to the Listed Prix Rene Bedel at Lyon winner Reverie Solitaire (Nashwan), herself the dam of Gr2 Badener Meile winner Royal Solitaire (Shamardal).
Urban Castle is also a half-sister to Samdaniya (Machiavellian), a winner in England and dam of Gr3 Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury winner Dabyah (Sepoy), and to Kaabari (Seeking The Gold), a winner in England and granddam of this year’s Gr3 Snow Fairy Stakes winner Thundering Heights (Night Of Thunder).
The granddam Cloud Castle (In The Wings) won the Gr3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket and finished third in the Gr1 Prix Vermeille, she is a half-sister to Gr1 winners Luso (Salse) and Warrshan (Northern Dancer).
Gr1 winner Kingman (Invincible Spirit) is advertised at £150,000 at Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket in 2021.
