Spielburg is SW16 for Union Rags winning Saturday’s Gr2 Los Alamitos Futurity (8.5f).
The Great One (Tamarkuz) set a solid pace and turned for home well clear with Spielburg the only one giving chase, closing gamely to get up in the final strides and score by a nose with Petruchio (Into Mischief) 3-1/2 lengths away in third. (pic: Los Alamitos Racing/Benoit).
It is the second win from six starts for the Bob Baffert-trained Spielburg, a $1 million Keeneland September yearling.
Spielberg’s dam Miss Squeal (Smart Strike) won three times and a half-sister to three stakes winners including Curlin Stakes at Saratoga winner Outplay (Bernardini).
The granddam Miss Kate (Storm Cat) won four races and Listed placed in the USA and a three-quarter sister to Newfoundland (Storm Cat) and a half-sister to Gr1 winner Strong Mandate (Tiznow).
Union Rags (Dixie Union) also has Gr1 winner Union Strike and SW Still There out of mares by Smart Strike. Union Rags also has Gr1 winner Dancing Rags out of a Storm Cat mare as well as Gr1 winner Paradise Woods out of a mare by Forest Wildcat (Storm Cat).
Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags is advertised at $30,000 at Lane’s End in Kentucky in 2021.
