Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup Turf (11f) at Gulfstream winner Colonel Liam is the 11th Gr1 winner for Bernardini as a broodmare sire.
The Todd Pletcher-trained Colonel Liam came from midfield to finish with a flourish in the home stretch to defeat stablemate Largent (Into Mischief) going away by a neck with Cross Bordet (English Channel) two lengths further back third.
It is the first graded win for Colonel Liam, the third Gr1 winner for Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song), who also has Gr1 winner Wicked Whisper out of a Bernardini mare.
Bernardini’s 11 Gr1 winners are by 10 different stallions and he has 43 stakes winners to date with three of them – Mo Town (Gr1), Modernist (Gr2) and Mopotism (Gr2) by Uncle Mo and Gr1 winner Gretzky The Great by Nyquist (Uncle Mo).
Gr1 winner Maxfield is by Street Sense (Street Cry) as is Gr3 Shared Sense as well as Gr3 Yulong Warrior (Street Cry).
Bernardini mares have generally done well with Mr Prospector-line stallions including Distorted Humor (Arabian Hope & Five Star General), Curlin (Paris Lights), Quality Road (Dunbar Road), Alternation (Serengeti Empress) and Pioneerofthenile (Dark Nile).
