Duplications of Danzig in pedigrees nowadays are relatively common however, there is one combination beginning to appear more frequently.
Monday’s English Listed winner Bahrain Pride is by Kodiac and inbred to Danzig through Danehill and Green Desert.
Kodiac is a Danehill half-brother to Green Desert’s Group 1 winner Invincible Spirit and has already displayed his effectiveness over mares carrying Green Desert.
His dual Group 1 winning daughter Fairyland has Green Desert as the sire of her third-dam, European Champion 2yo Filly of 2014 Tiggy Wiggy is out of a mare by Kheleyf (Green Desert) and his Gr3 winner Danehill Kodiac is out of a Green Desert mare.
Kodiac (pic: Tally Ho Stud) also has Italian Listed winner Azzeccagarbugli out of a mare by Desert Style while Gr2 winner and first-season sire Kodi Bear has Green Desert as his maternal grandsire.
Group2 winner Adaay has Sheikh Albadou (Green Desert) as his maternal grandsire while Kodiac’s current Group 1 winning filly Campanelle is inbred 2×4 to Danehill
This pattern is already repeating itself through sons of Kodiac.
His Group 3 winning son Coulsty’s first stakes winner Santosha is 3×4 Danehill out of a mare by Zoffany.
Similarly Kodiac’s Celebration Mile winning son Kodi Bear is 3×4 Danzig and his first stakes winner Cobh has Anabaa (Danzig) as his maternal grandsire.
Adaay has Group 3 Premio Primi Passi third Doctor Strange with Green Desert as his maternal grandsire and Listed placed Furlong Factor out of a mare by Exceed And Excel (Danehill).
Kodiac’s Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Prince Of Lir sired this year’s Norfolk Stakes winner The Lir Jet out of a mare by Green Desert.
The combination of Danehill and Green Desert was perhaps inevitable given both stallions stood in Europe and both were such successful stallions.
Group 1 winners from the Danehill sire-line out of mares carrying Green Desert include All Too Hard, Samitar, Mount Nelson, Bushranger and Alfred Nobel.
All Too Hard (a grandson of Flying Spur) has Group 3 winner Amangiri out of a Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare and 2yo Gr3 winner Hard Landing out of a Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare as well as Listed winners Cuba (Redoute’s Choice), Unfair Dismissal (Exceed And Excel) and Hard Rock Girl (Fastnet Rock).
The combination has also been effective when reversed.
Siyouni, out of a Danehill mare, has the admirable Laurens out of a Cape Cross (Green Desert) mare while Frankel (out of a Danehill mare) has Cracksman with Green Desert as his maternal grandsire.
The Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Persian King is by Kingman (Invincible Spirit) out of a mare by Dylan Thomas (Danehill) and this year’s Group 1 winners Tawkeel and Russian Camelot are bred similarly.
Tawkeel is by Teofilo (Galileo out of a Danehill mare) out of a mare by Oasis Dream (Green Desert) and the South Australian Derby winner Russian Camelot is by Camelot (granddam by Danehill) out of a mare by Cape Cross (Green Desert)
There are currently more than 200 stakes winners inbred to Danehill – last Saturday’s Australian Group 3 winner Immortal Love the most recent example.
