Reigning Horse Of The Year Summer Pudding showed she is more than capable of mixing it in open company with a dominant win in Saturday’s Gr1 Summer Cup (2000m) at Turffontein.
Settled midfield to the home turn, last season’s Champion 3YO filly struck the front 200m out and then drew away to defeat Running Brave (Brave Tin Soldier) by two lengths with Tree Tumbo (Silvano) a further 4-3/4 lengths away in third.
Summer Pudding in unbeaten in nine starts and is being touted as South Africa’s answer to the unbeaten Black Caviar.
Bred in partnership between Mauritzfontein and Wilgerbosdrift, the Mauritzfontein owned daughter of five-time Champion sire Silvano and Gr3 winner Cherry On The Cake was not offered for sale as a yearling after being injured.
She is now the winner of R2,089,500 in stakes.
