Death of Atlantic Jewel

Coolmore Australia has reported the death of four-time Group 1 winner Atlantic Jewel.

The 12yo had just foaled a colt by Justify before suffering a fatal haemorrhage.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock won 10 of her 11 starts, her Group I wins the 2011 Thousand Guineas, the 2012 All Aged Stakes, the 2013 Memsie Stakes and the 2013 Caulfield Stakes.

Her only defeat came in the 2013 Underwood Stakes to Dundeel.

Commencing her broodmare career in Ireland, she has produced a Royal Ascot winner in Russian Emperor, which won the Hampton Court Stakes at this year’s Royal meeting before finish down the track as second favourite in the English Derby and is now sold to continue racing in Hong Kong.

Pictured with Kavanagh, Atlantic Jewel had been brought back to Australia after spending her initial time as broodmare in Ireland. The Justify colt she was foaling survived and has already been placed with a foster mother.
