St Mark’s Basilica is the 5th Gr1 winner for Siyouni winning Saturday’s Dewhurst Stakes (7f) at Newmarket.
Travelling well behind horses approaching final two furlongs, St Mark’s Basilica was able to make his challenge between horses and stayed on strongly to defeat stablemate Wembley (Gaslileo) by three-quarters of a length with Thunder Moon (Zoffany) in third.
Bred by Bob Scarborough, St Mark’s Basilica sold for 1.3 million gns as a Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling and is the winner of two of his five starts.
He is a half-brother to Gr1 2000 Gns and Doncaster Futurity winner Magna Grecia (Invincible Spirit) and two other winners out of Gr3 Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown winner Cabaret (Galileo), a half-sister to Gr3 Solario Stakes at Sandown winner Drumfire (Danehill Dancer) and Hong Kong stakes winner Ho Choi (Pivotal),
Siyouni also has Sottsass out of a Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare as well as stakes winners Sacred Life (Montjeu), La Signare (Beat Hollow), Simona (El Prado) Etoile (Authorized) and Wally (Motivator) bred similarly with Gr2 winner Volta and Listed winner Nice To See You having Sadler’s Wells as their maternal grandsire.
Siyouni was represented by SW41 later in the day when Rajani made most of the running to win the Prix Le Fabuleux at Chantilly.
