Gr3 San Juan Capistrano Handicap (14f) at Santa Anita winner Red King is SW51 for English Channel.
Claimed for $35,000 last February at Santa Anita by current trainer Phil d’Amato, Red King finished third in the race last year but had no problems on Sunday, sailing home 4-1/4 lengths clear of Siberian Ibis (Excelebration).
Red King is the best of nine winners out of Youre Speeding Luv (A P Indy), a three-quarter sister to Gr1 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Belmont Park winner Indy Five Hundred (A P Indy) and Gr3 Locust Grove Handicap at Churchill Downs winner Delta Princess (A P Indy), herself the dam of champion Royal Delta (Empire Maker) and Gr1 winners Delta Prince (Street Cry) and Crown Queen (Smart Strike).
Three-time Grade 1 winner English Channel (Smart Strike) also has Gr3 winner Optimizer out of a mare by A P Indy (Seattle Slew) as well as Gr2 winner Skyring out of a Seattle Slew mare.
English Channel commenced his stud career at Hurricane Hall Stud before transferring to Lane’s End Farm in 2015. He has stood at Calumet Stud in Kentucky since 2015 and is advertised at $35,000 in 2020.
