Cornflower Blue is SW104 for Savabeel winning Sunday’s Gr3 John Grigg Stakes (1400m) for 3yos at Ashburton.
Cornflower Blue came with a sustained challenge in the home straight to wear down Embers (Darci Brahma) inside the final 100m to score.
It is the second win from four starts for the bred and raced by Waikato Stud Cornflower Blue which broke a wither leading up to the 2019 NZB National yearling sale and had to be withdrawn.
She is the first winner from three foals to race for Tiffany Blue (O’Reilly), a winner in Perth and a sister to Gr3 Concorde Stakes at Ellerslie winner Mosse and to Macau Listed-placed My Pony.
The granddam Golden Sparkle (Gold Brose) was unraced and a sister to Parfore, the dam of Gr1 winners Terravista and Tiger Tees as well as Gr2 winner Ball Of Muscle and Listed winner Our Lukas.
Champion New Zealand sire Savabeel (Zabeel) has enjoyed great success with mares by O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) who preceded him at Waikato Stud with Gr1 winners Savaria, Costume, Diademe and Embellish out of O’Reilly mares and Savvy Coup and The Chosen One with O’Reilly as their maternal grandsire.
The cross Savabeel / O’Reilly currently produces 13 percent stakes winners to runners.
He is advertised at $100,000 at Waikato Stud in 2020.
