Ole Kirk confirmed his status as the best three-year-old colt in Australia at the present time with victory in Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
With Willie Pike negotiating a clear passage around tiring horses before the home turn, Ole Kirk produced his now trade mark big finish to run down Aysar in the home straight to score by a head.
It is consecutive Gr1 wins for Ole Kirk and co trainer Wayne Hawkes told Racingdotcom it was an important win for the son of Written Tycoon and out of a sister to the unbeaten Black Caviar and a half-sister to Gr1 winner All Too Hard which was trained by Hawkes Racing.
“I don’t normally get nervous but it hit me about five minutes before the race because I thought if he wins this he is going to be the best three-year-old in the country and with the pedigree he has got, it doesn’t get much better,” Hawkes said.
“The owners spent a lot of money on him as a yearling, when Ole Kirk’s uncle is All Too Hard and his aunty is Black Caviar.
“This horse is the best three-year-old in the country and it’s a mantle that right at the moment they can’t wipe off his resume.
“Hats off to Willie Pike. He’s like D Oliver. He was cool, he was calm, he was relaxed and he was on the best horse and got the job done.”
