Sunday’s Deauville Group 3 winner Garrus is the 28th Group winner for Acclamation and another example of a growing pedigree combination his sire enjoys.
The first stakes winner in the first three generations of his female pedigree which further back includes Group 1 winner Danehill Dancer, the Max Morris-bred Garrus (pic: Twitter) is out of the Irish winner Queen Of Power, a daughter of Medicean (Machiavellian).
Acclamation (Royal Applause) currently has three stakes winners out of Medicean mares from six runners with the recent Deauville Gr2 winning juvenile Accakaba and the Irish Listed winner Drumfad Bay.
Interestingly, Medicean is out of Mystic Goddess, a granddaughter of Northern Dancer out of a Sassafras mare while Acclamation’s grandsire Waajib is bred the same way.
Acclamation posted his best win as a four-year-old in the Gr2 Diadem Stakes, the same season he was placed behind Choisir in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and Oasis Dream in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York.
From a somewhat blue collar start at Rathbarry Stud in Ireland, Acclamation has earned his recognition with results, five Group 1 winners among 28 with 59 stakes winners in total.
One of those, the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes winner and now successful sire Dark Angel, gave us a first indication of things to come being out of a mare by Machiavellian (Mr Prospector).
Dark Angel is certainly not averse to a close duplication of Machiavellian it would seem, with his Group 1 winning daughter Althiqa out of a Shamardal mare so 3×4 to Machiavellian and his US Grade 1 winner Hunt is out of a mare by Machiavellian’s classic winning son Vettori while Acclamation himself has French Listed winner Vaniloquio out of a mare by Vettori.
Dark Angel also has French Group 3 winner Stage Magic with Machiavellian as his maternal grandsire as well as Listed winners Fantasy Lady and Hareem Queen out of mares by Shamardal while as a broodmare sire he is responsible for UK Listed winning filly Castle Hill Cassie by Casamento, a son of Shamardal.
Machiavellian ranks as one of his sire’s best runners in Europe, a champion two-year-old for Francois Boutin winning the Prix Morny and Prix de la Salamandre.
The Niarchos-homebred had a ‘stallions’ pedigree too being by Mr Prospector out of the Halo mare Coup de Folie, a granddaughter of Natalma and inbred herself to Almahmoud.
Machiavellian sired 13 Group 1 winners and his influence is ever present currently as the broodmare sire of Shamardal whose classic winning son Lope de Vega is 3×3 to Machiavellian.
Returning to Acclamation, he is also the sire of the Gr2 winner Mehmas, who set a record for first-crop winners with his first runners in 2020, out of a Machiavellian mare.
One of Mehmas’s first-crop stakes winners Mehmento is 3×4 to Machiavellian
Acclamation’s Gr1 winning son Equiano is the sire of New Zealand Group 2 winner King Louis and the Hong Kong stakes winner Jolly Convergance out of mares carrying Machiavellian while Acclamation himself has French Listed winner Roero out of a mare by Titus Livius (Machiavellian).
As a broodmare sire Acclamation has two stakes winners by Lope de Vega in San Donato and Platinum Star.
In all things breeding there is no rhyme or reason why the combination is working so well however, given the early success of Acclamation with mares by Medicean one would imagine he, and his sons, will be covering more of them in the future.
