Shelby Cobra is SW7 for Toronado winning Saturday’s Springtime Stakes (1400m) for 3yos at Flemington.
Settled a little worse than midfield through halfway, Shelby Cobra eased out into the centre of the track in the home straight and then unwound a strong finish to reach the lead inside the 50m and defeat Tommy Gold (Sacred Falls) and Deep Speed (Deep Field).
Purchased for $130,000 at the Inglis Melbourne yearling sale from the draft of Maluka Thoroughbreds by Paul Moroney, the Mike Moroney-trained Shelby Cobra is now the winner of two of his three starts.
He is the only named foal to race for Segenhoe Valley (Dane Shadow) with his granddam Scone (Zabeel) a winner in Adelaide and a half-sister to South African Listed winner Sunday Silence (Squill) and Gr2 Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill runner-up Discretion (Canny Lad), the dam of Gr3 South Pacific Classic at Randwick winner Royal Discretion (Royal Academy), Abell Stakes at Moonee Valley winner Roulettes (Flying Spur) and Gr3-placed Tactfully (Flying Spur), the dam of Listed Alinghi Stakes at Caulfield winner Vezalay (Shamardal).
Scone is also a half-sister to Secret Silence (Fusaichi Pegasus), the winning dam of Gr1 Easter Handicap at Ellerslie winner Albany Reunion (Fastnet Rock) and to Chinese Whispers (Woodman), the winning dam of Tasmanian Oaks winner Rock Robster (Fastnet Rock).
The third-dam Nothings Secret (Secreto) an unraced half-sister to four stakes winners including Gr1 winner and sire Northjet (Northfields).
Later in the afternoon Affair To Remember became SW8 coming with a late surge to win the Gr2 Matriarch Stakes for mares over 2000m.
Affair To Remember is a half-sister to Gr3 South Australian Fillies Classic third Bahamas (Teofilo) and South Australian Listed-placed Exodus (Bernardini), their dam St Trinians (Black Hawk) a winner of eight races including the Listed Christmas Handicap and Penny Edition Stakes at Morphettville.
Gr1 winner Toronado (High Chaparral) is enjoying good success with mares from the Danehill sire-line with four stakes winners bred this way. He shuttles between Haras de Bouquetot in France and Swettenham Stud in Australia.
